Every webmaster has one thing in common, and it is that they want top listings in search engines. It’s not very easy to get sales from the search engines if you pick the wrong keywords. Doing keyword research is a very important part of starting an online business. If you do not do keyword research before starting an online business, you will fail.
There are many inexperienced website owners that claim that you should use keywords that are long tail. If you use long tail keywords from the start, you may be actually wasting time. Many keywords that are long tail never get searched at all. I have noticed that there many new website owners that optimize for search terms that never get searched.
You really need to look for keywords that get searched but aren’t being optimized very well. It not an issue if a keyword is long tail or not. The length of keywords has nothing to do with how hard it will be to rank well for them. There are actually many five word keywords that get more traffic than one word keywords, and those would be defined a long tail keywords.
I will let you know exactly what I do for keyword research. I look for keywords that I would want to rank well for. Then I plug them into Keyword Elite, and I find out how much traffic they are getting per month. I try to stay away from using the Google Keyword Tool because I don’t think it is very accurate with the search volume.
After that, I search the keywords that are getting a decent amount of visitors. I then use Yahoo Site explorer to analyze the number one ranked websites and their backlinks. After putting the website into Yahoo for analyzing, I check to see how many links the site has with the search keyword.
If I happen to notice that the website does not contain anchor text links, then I know that the website owner is very new to the online world. The realization is that the website owner does not know much about SEO, and I can get the number one spot with links and time.
Most people think it’s going to be much harder than it really is to rank well. You have to understand that most website owners don’t even know anything about search engine optimization. It is pretty easy to take the number one ranking and start earning money, if you find the right keywords.
